Far South Coast Dairy Development Group

The Far South Coast Dairy Development Group provides support, education and professional development opportunities for all dairy farmers in the Coastal region from Moruya to the Victorian border.

Key roles are coordination of extension activities and delivery of projects and opportunities in conjunction with Bega Cheese, Dairy NSW/Dairy Australia, Local Land Services, Agribusinesses and consultants. Effective communication with our farmers is an essential aspect as timely notification of events enables strong attendance. Our Facebook page, texting and direct email have proven to be the effective means of communicating. All farmers and employees within our region are welcome to contact the Chair to join the mailing list.

Geographic area

The The FSC DDG covers the dairying areas in Eurobodalla and Bega Valley Shires on the NSW south coast.

In 2014 working with the South East Local Land Services (SE LLS) we have successfully completed a DAFF funded irrigation project which will provide quality soil moisture data that can be used to enhance the viability of irrigation systems across the region.

The regions farmers have a very strong environmental focus and are very active in the Bega Cheese Environmental Management System (BEMS), a joint partnership with Local Council, Farmers, Bega Cheese and Local Land Services. This is supported in 2015 with a grant from 20 Million Trees Project.

Other regular activities include

  • Monthly Farmer Discussion Groups;
  • SE LLS and Dairy NSW funded Heifer Rearing Project
  • SE LLS funded Pastures Project
  • Multiple Dairy NSW/Dairy Australia funded extension programs including Livestock Euthanasia; Feeding Pastures for Profit; Financial Management; Unpacking the Eski workshops and more
  • Other regular activities include “Random Pub Meals” and “Ladies Lunch” which are essential social functions to relax with fellow farmers.

All of the regional activities target younger farmers. Over 75% of the farms in our region have young people and people who are young at heart owning, managing or transitioning into management of their businesses. The farmers of our region aim to be productive, efficient, environmentally conscious, sustainable and profitable. With average per farm production well above the state average, this is one of the leading dairy farming areas in NSW.
